GROUNDED IN CLAY

The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Fall 2023

ABOUT

Pueblo Indian pottery, rooted in earth, water, air, and fire, reflects America’s ancient Indigenous creativity, embodying land and place. "Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery," The Met's pioneering Native American exhibition, foregrounds Pueblo voices and aesthetics, showcasing over a hundred historical, modern, and contemporary clay works. It provides insight into Pueblo pottery as community-based knowledge and personal expression, spanning from the eleventh century to the present day.

Representing New Mexico's nineteen Río Grande Pueblos, Ysleta del Sur in West Texas, and the Hopi tribe of Arizona, the exhibited artworks highlight the aesthetic legacies of sovereign Indigenous nations. Curated by the Pueblo Pottery Collective, comprising sixty members from diverse backgrounds, the exhibition features works from significant collections such as the Indian Arts Research Center in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation in New York. Through visual and material languages, intergenerational narratives, and community engagement, the exhibition celebrates the enduring spirit of Pueblo pottery.
