PAUL MCCARTNEY: Eye of the Storm
Brooklyn Museum | Spring 2024
ABOUT
As The Beatles captured the hearts of millions, founding member Paul McCartney documented it all with his Pentax camera. The exhibition "Eyes of the Storm" takes viewers on a journey from the UK to New York, retracing the band's steps from six decades ago during the height of Beatlemania in 1963-64. This was when their first U.S. tour catapulted them to superstardom. Over 250 of McCartney’s recently unearthed photos from his archives offer a unique glimpse into the center of this whirlwind of attention and adoration. Many images buzz with the vibrant energy of 1960s New York City, a city that has cherished its love affair with The Beatles ever since.
Displayed alongside video clips and archival materials, these photographs not only highlight McCartney’s artistic versatility but also serve as a personal and historical record. They capture the grueling intensity of The Beatles' touring schedule, with the Fab Four constantly moving from concerts to hotels and back on the road, amidst fervent fans and relentless paparazzi. The collection resembles an affectionate family album, featuring McCartney and bandmates John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr during a transformative period in their lives. Through the "eyes of the storm," as McCartney puts it, this exhibition offers a unique perspective on this extraordinary epoch and allows us to relive the meteoric rise of a musical legend.
