EUROPEAN PAINTINGS

The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Fall 2023

ABOUT

The Met’s European Paintings collection, spanning from the thirteenth to the early twentieth century, includes over 2,500 works displayed in various galleries across The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters. Alongside individual masterpieces by renowned artists such as Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Gustav Klimt, the collection boasts significant holdings of early Italian, Northern, and seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, as well as works by El Greco and Goya.

Originating from the Museum’s initial purchase of 174 paintings in 1871, the collection has grown through donations, bequests, and curatorial acquisitions. Recent additions include seventeenth-century Italian paintings, plein-air oil sketches predating Impressionism, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European art. Continuously evolving, the collection reflects changing perspectives on art history and offers new avenues of exploration for both the public and scholars.
